Concussion Awareness Policy

Concussions are a serious concern in sports and physical activities. Aerial Cirque Over Denver is committed to creating a safe and healthy environment for our students. This Policy aims to educate coaches, students, and parents about the risks of concussions, the importance of early identification, and the steps to take for proper management.

Definition and Recognition of Concussion:

A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that affects normal brain function. It can be caused by a blow to the head, face, neck, or elsewhere on the body, with an impulsive force transmitted to the head. Coaches, students, and parents must be aware of the signs and symptoms of a concussion.

These may include but are not limited to:

Prevention:

Coaches will emphasize proper techniques and enforce safety rules during classes and performances. This is also why we have such a specific leveling system, a low student:teacher ratio, and require mats for all classes and showcases, no exceptions. To date, we have never had a concussion at Aerial Cirque Over Denver.

Reporting:

Any coach, student, or parent who suspects a concussion must immediately report it to the coaching staff or school administration (via email or phone). It is essential not to ignore or underestimate the severity of a head injury.

Removal from Play:

If a concussion is suspected, the student will be removed from play (classes) immediately. They should not return to activity on the same day and should be evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional.

Medical Evaluation:

Students suspected of having a concussion should undergo a comprehensive medical evaluation by a licensed healthcare provider experienced in concussion management. The student may not return to play until they receive written clearance from a qualified healthcare professional.

When In Doubt, Sit Them Out Policy at Aerial Cirque Over Denver:

A student who is suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury, will be removed from the class or performance immediately, and will not be allowed to return without written clearance from a licensed healthcare provider. This should be emailed to studio administration. The student should not be left alone, and the parent guardian will be notified to follow up accordingly.

As our classes are session based, please know we would work with you on makeup/roll over classes if you or you child had to take a prolonged leave of absence.

By adhering to this Concussion Awareness Policy, we are prioritizing the health and safety of our students. Together, we can create a culture that promotes concussion prevention, early identification, and appropriate management.
